By Wellington Shire Council - 14th June 2002 - Back to News

Councillor Gordon Cameron passed away peacefully at home. Gordon was a close friend, a respected colleague and a truly great member of the Wellington community. He will be greatly missed.

Councillor Cameron, aged 67, was a long-standing member of local government in Wellington. Born and educated in Maffra, he worked for Australia Post for 40 years, retiring as Divisional Manager Gippsland in 1989.

He served as a Maffra Shire Councillor until local government reorganisation in 1994 and was elected to Wellington Shire Council in 1997, serving as the Shire’s first Mayor 1997-98. In March 2000 he was re-elected as a Wellington Shire Councillor and also elected for his second term as Mayor, 2000-2001.

Both Councillor Cameron and his wife, Pat, (a former Maffra shire councillor for eight years and shire president in 1988/89) were recognised for their contribution to the community in 1996 when they were joint winners of the Wellington Shire Citizen of the Year Award.

Councillor Cameron worked throughout his life for community organisations across Maffra, including;

  • The Rotary Club of Maffra,
  • Maffra & District Development Group,
  • Maffra Bowls & Recreation Club,
  • Maffra Community Sports Club, and
  • Maffra Recreation Reserve Committee of Management.
  • Maffra Secondary College School Council

Chairman for two years and member for seven years of Macalister Water Board.

A strong family man, he leaves three adult children and 11 grandchildren.
