Work commences on new maternal and child health centre

Work has commenced on Traralgon’s new maternal and child health centre, located in the Traralgon civic precinct.

By Latrobe City Council - 23rd January 2006 - Back to News

Builders moved into the former Traralgon Shire and Latrobe City offices on the corner of Breed and Kay Streets on Monday, and have commenced the refurbishment of the building, with the demolition of a number of internal walls that once defined a warren of small rooms used for administration.

Latrobe City’s deputy mayor, Cr Bruce Lougheed, said the provision of the new maternal and child health centre will mean a significant improvement in support for new parents.

"The new Traralgon maternal and child health centre will be able to offer parents extended hours, additional resources and better facilities. In addition it is ideally located, adjacent to the central business district, and is close to public transport and other facilities," Cr Lougheed explained.

"This new centre is being designed to provide a comfortable, relaxed and welcoming environment for parents and children; with four consultation rooms, breastfeeding and changing facilities; and space for parent’s groups, training and drop-in support."

Latrobe City’s manager family services, David Welch, said that the new entrance way, waiting room and facilities have all been designed and are being purpose built to be user-friendly for mums with babies and young children. "For example doorways and a wide and gentle access ramp at the entranceway, facilitate mothers with prams with ease," Mr Welch said.

"This new central facility will also provide capacity for more innovative and specialised maternal and child health services, while facilitating networking and professional development for nurses," Mr Walsh added.

The commencement of work on the maternal and child health centre in the civic precinct, follows the recent completion and opening of the new Traralgon library in former council office space, and the refurbishment of the service centre for service delivery. The function room, council chamber and performing arts centre remain as part of civic precinct without alteration, although work is currently underway on refurbishment of the performing arts centre’s roof.

Tradesmen will be working on the new maternal and child health centre over the next four months, with the new facility scheduled to be open by mid-year.
