Latrobe City’s youth services program officer Nicole Carder said that five bands battled it out for the title but Traralgon metal band, ‘Bleeding Sadist’ took out the prize.

"Chris Coffey, the lead singer, won the crowd and judges over with his singing and on-stage performance. The winners were selected based on their ability to perform together, their stage presence, interaction with the audience and their recording potential. ‘Bleeding Sadist’ will now use the recording time they won as their prize to record a CD to try to secure a recording contract and to promote their music," Ms Carder explained.

"One of the other finalists, ‘Since 91’ was awarded an encouragement prize to assist them with furthering their promising music career. Their footy-inspired song ‘AFL’ had the crowd pumping and singing along," Ms Carder explained.

"The crowd experienced everything from metal to funk and indie music.

The winners of last year’s event, ‘Straight 80’ were a major hit with the crowd. They were mobbed onstage afterwards by eager autograph hunters. The FReeZA committee was very happy with the turnout for the day and hopes for it to continue as an annual event, to showcase the wealth of talent in the area.

Chris Coffey from ‘Bleeding Sadist’ said that the announcement that his band had won came as something of a surprise.

"We were really surprised that we won but believe it was the culmination of the band’s hard work over the past year. Winning the studio time means we can now add a few more songs to our playlist," Mr Coffey said.

Ms Carder added that the judges who had come from Melbourne for the event and had many years’ experience in the music industry and were extremely impressed with the quality of talent and diverse music coming out of this region.

"We had around 20 bands apply to play at the event so there is a lot more talent out there waiting to be unearthed. Other bands even approached me at the event wanting to know how to get involved next year. Latrobe City is proud to be able to support these local musicians and give them an arena in which to play in front of a live, appreciative audience, get invaluable stage experience and showcase their skills," Ms Carder concluded.
