Innovative Plan For Traralgon Court House

An innovative plan for the iconic Traralgon Court House has been mooted by Latrobe City Council as a unique way to conserve its heritage value as well as allowing for part commercial use.

By Latrobe City - 31st July 2013 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Sandy Kam, said that the Traralgon Court House was a significant building in Traralgon’s CBD that demanded sound management to conserve its cultural values for the benefit of future generations.

"Over the past four years and through several Expression of Interest processes we have tried to find a way to achieve a balance between keeping the building open for community use but not imposing a huge burden on ratepayers in terms of maintenance and operational running costs.

"This new proposal is for a hybrid use of the facility that would retain the bulk of the building for community use, whilst opening up the newer, extension area built in the 1950s for commercial use. This would mean being able to sustainably maintain the building and adhere to the Traralgon Court House Conservation Management Plan," Cr Kam said.

"The community use model would see council invest capital dollars in the upgrade of the facility so it is suitable for community use and hire. The commercial model would see a new EOI process seeking potential innovative users for this portion of the building.

"Being able to retain the majority of the building for community groups or residents to use means we can all take pride in the history and heritage of this important building. Being able to rent out the extended portion of the building as a commercial venture will ensure ongoing funds to maintain that building as it should be. It’s a win-win situation for this icon of Latrobe City," Cr Kam concluded.
