Celebrating Baw Baw artists

Baw Baw Shire Council acquired two pieces of artwork by local artists Christine Cochrane and Andrew Southill at the launch of the Art Acquisition program last week.

The pieces were chosen for their significance and superb artistic technique.

The art acquisition is an integral part of the shire’s arts and cultural strategy and showcases the work of many Baw Baw Shire artists, said council mayor Ian Clark.

"The shire is always proud to support our local talent and I know everyone here appreciates the effort, care and patience that all our artists have put into this exhibition," said Cr Clark.

"The purpose of the art acquisition and our wider arts and cultural program is to ensure that art reflecting the landscape, the people and the heritage of Baw Baw is accessible to all residents.

"Council hopes to develop a strong collection of significant local pieces for the people of the Shire," said Cr Clark

The exhibition will be open to the public until the 16th of June at the West Gippsland Art Centre and the public is invited to vote for their choice of the exhibits via the peoples’ choice award.

Director of Meeniyan Art Gallery and member of the art acquisition-judging panel Meg Viney explained the value of art to the community.

"Artists are the lens through which the public is able to see more clearly, to glean new understanding. Artworks may be political, perhaps spiritual, but they need to be more than representational if they are to yield this clarity," said Ms Viney.

The two art-works selected were "In Season" by Neerim South artist Christine Cochrane and "Underground" by Warragul artist Andrew Southill.
