Community Feedback Sought On Draft Southern Towns Outdoor Recreation Plan

The draft Southern Towns Outdoor Recreation Plan has been released for public comment following Monday’s council meeting.

By Latrobe City Council - 21st April 2009 - Back to News

The plan, which has been developed through significant consultation with community sporting groups and recreational facility users, examines the sporting and recreational facilities located across the southern townships and communities in Latrobe City.

Latrobe City’s deputy mayor, Cr Kellie O’Callaghan, said the townships south of the Princes Highway boast a large number of sports that are played at various local venues including football, netball, cricket, soccer, baseball, tennis, hockey, bowls and equestrian activities.

"The ongoing popularity of these sports, in addition to other more casual activities like walking, playing, picnicking or just enjoying these parks and recreation areas, have all been considered in the recreation plan," Cr O’Callaghan explained.

"In previous years, council has completed outdoor recreation plans in Traralgon, Moe Newborough and Morwell that have resulted in funding commitments of over $600,000 towards priority projects identified in each of these towns. Works undertaken with these funds have included pavilion extensions and redevelopments, lighting upgrades, netball court improvements and other upgrades being made to a number of reserves within each of the towns," Cr O’Callaghan said.

Latrobe City’s coordinator recreation and open space planning, Ian Murphy, said that ten key reserves and facilities in southern towns have been analysed as part of this plan.

These are: Boolarra Memorial Park, Callignee Recreation Reserve, Hazelwood South Reserve Churchill, Gaskin Park Churchill, Andrews Park West Churchill, Flynn Recreation Reserve, Hazelwood North Reserve, Warren Terrace Hazelwood North, Traralgon South Recreation Reserve, and Yinnar Recreation Reserve.

"In consultation with the users, master plans have been developed that identify numerous opportunities for improvements to these reserves. We now need to hear from the wider community to see if we have appropriately captured the thoughts and ideas put forward; and to help determine the priority for each of the projects listed in the plan," Mr Murphy said.
