Council Targets Dust

Bass Coast Shire Council has begun another round of dust suppressant treatments on some of its unsealed urban roads.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 29th October 2007 - Back to News

Council’s Infrastructure Director, Steve Piasente said the Shire has over 200 kilometres of unsealed urban roads.

"During the dry periods dust can be a significant problem for residents," said Mr Piasente.

"Since 2005, we have run a number of successful dust suppressant programs.

"In the coming weeks, we will be placing primer seals on an additional 12 kilometres of road.

"The strategy is to target roads leading into Sunderland Bay, Surf Beach, Smiths Beach, Sunset Strip, Grantville and Cowes West."

Primer seals involve spraying bitumen onto the road followed by spreading and rolling stone into the surface.

"This treatment is cost effective and will cause minimal delay and disruption to traffic," said Mr Piastente.

"The roadway will be open to traffic following the application of stone."

Mr Piasente said the total cost of the dust suppression works in the current financial year is $200,000.

"Council trialled a number of different products over the last few years and the most effective treatment was primer seals," explained Mr Piasente.

"Although a primer seal was more expensive than some of the other treatments Council trialled, the advantages outweighed the initial cost.

"Primer seals are three times more expensive, but they will last at least four times longer than the alternatives," informed Mr Piasente.

"They provide a much better road surface and really are the best outcome for the community.

Mr Piasente said the dust suppression seals are a medium term treatment to eliminate dust in residential areas across the Shire.

"Our long term strategy is to address the issue of unmade roads through owner funded street construction programs, such as the one completed last year in Cape Woolamai," Mr Piasente confirmed.

A full list of the roads included in the dust suppression program is available from Council’s website or by contacting Council.
