Member for Morwell Russell Northe is encouraging community and ex-service organisations to apply for funding to ensure the sacrifice and service of veterans is acknowledged in local communities.

Mr Northe said there were four grants streams that enabled communities to better connect with local veterans and commemorate past conflicts.

"Acknowledging the contribution our veterans have made to the region, state and nation is extremely important and this latest round of grants provide funds to ensure their sacrifice is remembered forever," Mr Northe said.

"There are a number of grants that enable groups to complete a wide range of projects from restoring war memorials, researching and highlighting the efforts of local soldiers during World War I and other significant conflicts to ensuring that veterans in need and their loved ones have the support they need."

Grants are available under the following categories:

  • The Restoring Community War Memorials and Avenues of Honour program – funding of up to $20,000 to ensure local war memorials and honour rolls are restored to their original condition or reflect the service history of the local community;
  • The Victoria Remembers program assists communities to make a local connection with the Centenary of World War I. It can also be used for projects and activities that commemorate other wars;
  • The Anzac Centenary Community Grants program funds projects, up to $20,000, that help to leave a lasting legacy for future generations of those who served in World War I; and
  • The ANZAC Day Proceeds Fund provides funds for practical assistance for veterans and their dependents who are in need. This funding is given to organisations that provide welfare support to veterans.

Mr Northe said funds in the ANZAC Day Proceeds Fund were generated through sporting matches held on ANZAC Day.
