Public comment sought on sale of properties

Latrobe City Council is inviting public comment prior to considering the potential sale of five properties in the municipality, to determine if they are surplus to community requirements.

By Latrobe City Council - 13th August 2003 - Back to News

The properties being considered for potential sale are a reserve in Emerald Court, Traralgon; Winchester Reserve in Winchester Way, Hazelwood Heights; the Koornalla Park Farm, Koornalla; Marsh Park, Blair Athol Drive Traralgon; and the former Andrews Park West Preschool in Churchill.

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Richard Hancock, said Council had received expressions of interest from individuals for the Traralgon, Koornalla and Hazelwood Heights properties, and from the Churchill Christian Fellowship which had expressed interest in the Churchill property.

"From time to time property owners express interest in acquiring an adjoining property or easement owned by Council, and as the responsible authority, we need to seek comment from the community to see if this is in the best interest of all concerned," Mr Hancock explained.

"In a number of cases there are no objections raised to a property being sold, and the acquisition is seen as being prudent. In other cases there may be objections from the community in relation to such a sale.

"When we seek community comment it is part of Council’s accountability mechanism, in addition to the statutory requirement placed on the municipality in accordance with the Local Government Act. It’s a means of determining that we are acting in the best public interest," Mr Hancock added.

Council will consider any written public comment concerning the potential sale of these properties at its September Development Committee Meeting. This meeting will be held 7pm on Monday 15 September at Kernot Hall, Morwell, and any person wishing to make a comment concerning the potential sale should lodge a written submission with Latrobe City Council by Monday 25 August 2003.
