Church Street Morwell Refurbishment Plans FinalisedFinal designs for the refurbishment of Church Street in Morwell have been completed with the vision of revitalising this area of Morwell and creating a vibrant and safe town centre. By Latrobe City Council - 5th September 2007 - Back to News Designs are currently on display in all council service centres and libraries and as well as on council’s website.
Latrobe City councillor, Cr Bruce Lougheed, said that the focus of the project would be improving the visual appeal, safety and ambience of the area.
"The old brick pavers will be replaced with a new footpath and the lighting will also be replaced with in-ground LED lighting to provide an attractive night-time ambience for those visiting the many restaurants in the street. With the bricks that are removed from the footpath, new seating will be constructed and additional street trees will be planted.
"Improved safety is a feature of the design with the removal of the brick booth seating areas and the refurbishment of the park. The decommissioning of the existing public toilets in Post Office Lane will also be undertaken in accordance with council’s adopted Public Toilet Strategy, and following commissioning of new facilities adjacent to Legacy Place.
"With the improved passive surveillance of the refurbished street, we hope that more people will visit both during the day and night to enjoy the atmosphere," Cr Lougheed explained.
Cr Lougheed said that a doily pattern had been designed and copyrighted to Latrobe City Council which would be a key feature of the refurbishment.
"The coloured pattern will be imprinted into the asphalt which is being used as the paving material that will replace the existing brick pavers. This doily has been designed to reflect the history of the street with links to the textile factory that was present many years ago and to the very distinctive multicultural flavour that currently exists.
"This innovative and high technology street treatment will contribute to the public art component of the street re-design," Cr Lougheed said.
"Accessibility issues are being addressed in the new design and footpath grades will be altered to improve access to shops by removing steps where possible."
Cr Lougheed said that the development of the design was implemented through a partnership approach involving council, the Church Street traders and Advance Morwell.
"I’d particularly like to thank the traders and Advance Morwell for their valuable input into this exciting project," Cr Lougheed said.
"We are delighted with the result and with the process that was employed in obtaining the result. We would encourage residents to visit a service centre, library or log onto the website at www.latrobe.vic.gov.au to view the design," Cr Lougheed concluded.
This project is being jointly funded by Latrobe City Council and the Department of Planning and Community Development. The project is being delivered as part of the Transit Cities initiative - a State Government program that is addressing population growth over the next 25 years. The works are anticipated to commence early in 2008.
