Education and Training Reform Regulations Review – Have Your Say!A message from Melina Bath to the parents of school childrenand to educators as planned changes to the education system. By Portal Admin - 24th January 2017 - Back to News "Have your say!"
That’s the message from Melina Bath MLC to parents of school children and to educators as planned changes to the education system were quietly released for comment by the Andrews Labor Government just on Christmas.
Ms Bath is a former teacher and is the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Country Schools.
"The Education and Training Reform Regulations 2017 have been released for comment, but I don’t think many people outside the government would even be aware of this," Ms Bath said.
"Community consultation is vital when considering any changes to regulations."
"The Andrews Labor Government’s media release on this came just a few days before Christmas and appears to have received very little coverage."
"The government’s statement also only talked about home schooling; however the draft regulations cover a range of areas including a trial change to the school bus program, and changes to how school councils and parents’ clubs are run. Parents’ clubs won’t even be able to run their own bank accounts."
"Did the government intend to escape public scrutiny by announcing these proposals once the school holidays had commenced?"
"The school bus program is very important for rural and regional Victoria. A trial of changes to the program is to be undertaken at 11 schools."
"There are also significant changes to the regulations covering home schooling. Anyone who home schools a child, or intends to, should analyse these draft regulations."
"It is important that people take this opportunity to have their say about the impact of the proposed changes, about how education is regulated in this state, and to make a formal submission to have their views heard."
Submissions on the proposed Regulations and the Regulatory Impact Statement close on Tuesday 28 February 2017.
