Face Lift For Phillip Island Information CentreA $250,000 grant to assist with the expansion and refurbishment of the Phillip Island Visitor Information Centre at Newhaven was announced today by the Hon John Brumby MP, Treasurer for Victoria. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 27th February 2006 - Back to News Minister Brumby made the announcement during a function at the Visitor Information Centre.
Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin, said the benefits of the funding to Bass Coast residents and visitors would be substantial.
"The current Visitor Information Centre was built in 1977 and is struggling to provide the kind of services needed in 2006," said Cr Goodwin.
"People’s expectations of the range of services available at a Visitor Information Centre have increased dramatically, even in the past few years.
"These Centres need to be able to book accommodation, sell tickets to events and attractions, supply information for tourists, provide internet access, as well as run a kiosk."
Visitor numbers to Bass Coast have been steadily rising and Cr Goodwin confirmed that current annual visitation to the centre is around 150,000 people.
"That’s an incredible amount of people through the doors each year," said Cr Goodwin.
"And that number is set to rise even further, with all the new developments across the Shire and the improved facilities on offer at the Visitor Information Centre."
Cr Goodwin said Council would contribute the balance of funding to the project. The exact amount would be determined, based on the outcome of an application for funding lodged with the Federal Government.
"In partnership with the State Government, we will be able to expand and modernise the Visitor Information Centre.
"Our aim is to be a market leader in service provisions and facilities, so that visitors to our Shire stay longer and get the most out of their time at Bass Coast.
"That will have a flow on effect which will benefit the local community," said Cr Goodwin.
"In addition, the redevelopment will contain new meeting room facilities, which will be a valuable community resource," Cr Goodwin continued. The Phillip Island Visitor Information Centre at Newhaven is the hub of the Visitor Information Network across the Shire, which includes Inverloch, Wonthaggi and Cowes.
