Community to input into Morwell River plans

The communities of Boolarra, Yinnar, Driffield, Churchill, Yinnar South and surrounding districts are being invited to have their say on the creation of a plan to affect environmental improvements to the Morwell River and its tributaries.

By Latrobe City Council - 16th March 2006 - Back to News

Community information meetings on the subject are being held in Boolarra and Yinnar during the next few weeks, providing communities with their first opportunity to input into a proposed Neighbourhood Environment Improvement Plan (NEIP).

Latrobe City, which has recently completed coordination of the Traralgon Creek NEIP, has organised the information meetings for the 29 March in Boolarra and 6 April in Yinnar.

Latrobe City’s NEIP officer, Mike Answerth, said the meetings are being held to explain to local residents the NEIP process, and to seek their input into creating a proposal for undertaking a similar course of action on the Morwell River catchment.

"The NEIP process gives local communities the opportunity to have meaningful input into the creation of long term plans for the improvement and sustainability of the environment in their river catchment," Mr Answerth said.

"Issues such as water quality, protection of river banks, willow removal, reintroduction of riparian vegetation, and effects on farm sustainability are all up for discussion at these meetings.

"Neighbourhood Environment Improvement Plans are a fairly new concept now being used throughout the state, which allow local communities to work in partnership with other key stakeholders, such as government agencies and industry, to develop and implement a long term improvement plan for the environment in their neighbourhood.

"West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority, which is currently developing a Morwell River management plan, will also be represented at the meetings to outline the process for community consultation on its own plan," he added.

Meetings will be held at the Boolarra Hotel on Wednesday 29 March and at the Yinnar memorial hall on Thursday 6 April commencing at 7.30pm. All interested residents are invited to attend.

Further information can be obtained by contacting Mike Answerth, telephone 5128 5074.
