Hyland Highway Landfill Receives Funding For Best Practice Landfill

Latrobe City Council has been successful in attracting funding of $250,000 to meet best practice standards for landfill management.

By Latrobe City - 5th July 2012 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Ed Vermeulen, said that the funding was part of State Government’s Transition Support to Improve Rural Landfill Infrastructure program.

"The funding will assist Council to meet additional costs to construct new cells at the landfill to meet tighter Environment Protection Authority Victoria regulations. We will use the funding to cover the costs of protective geomembranes – the material used to line landfill cells to assist in the management of leachate and provide the highest level of protection for the environment – and associated testing, specialist installation and auditing of the liners during construction.

"Whilst the Hyland Highway landfill already exceeds best practice standards, a process of continuous improvements has strong environmental benefits, especially in relation to protection of the environment," Cr Vermeulen said.

"Operating a landfill and ensuring it is properly managed is a large impost on Council expenditure. This funding responds to and recognises the financial pressures associated with meeting higher landfill standards, so we appreciate the State Government’s funding allocation for this project," Cr Vermeulen concluded.
