Jacinta Allan backtracks on bail laws amid criticism over community safety and rising violent crime concerns
Jacinta Allan admits weakened bail laws have compromised safety, but Martin Cameron demands immediate action, not reviews. He criticises Labor's response as political, urging tougher laws to prevent further violent crime and community harm.
After blocking attempts by the Victorian Nationals and Liberals to strengthen the state's bail laws, Jacinta Allan has performed a stunning backflip by admitting Labor's weakened bail laws have compromised community safety.

Tougher bail laws
The Nationals' Member for Morwell, Martin Cameron, said recidivist offenders have been allowed to run rampant for far too long - breaking into homes, terrorising communities, and committing serious assault - only to be bailed and allowed to offend again. "Jacinta Allan has shown she is more concerned with attempting to rehabilitate violent offenders than she is about keeping Victorians safe."
"This stunning backflip is a knee-jerk reaction to plummeting polls for Labor and comes conveniently on the eve of the Werribee by-election. I have been campaigning and petitioning for tighter bail laws with the Gordon family since the tragic death of their beloved Dr Ash, and every step of the way Labor has denied there is a problem."
"People have been pleading with Labor to implement sensible measures to ensure no family has to suffer through the trauma and grief that comes with losing a loved one to violent crime. Even with the admission that more needs to be done to strengthen bail laws, Jacinta Allan has only committed to a review. We don't need a review - we need tougher bail laws now to protect the community," Mr Cameron said.
