Mulch to improve health of trees in Grey Street

A median strip in Grey Street Traralgon has been stripped of its existing grass coverage and is being mulched to improve growing conditions for streetscape trees.

By Latrobe City Council - 8th January 2004 - Back to News

The narrow median strip separates the main traffic flow in Grey Street from a service road that provides access to Lavalla’s St Paul’s Campus and the Traralgon Secondary College.

Latrobe City’s General Manager City Infrastructure, Michael Edgar, said the work was being carried out during the school holidays to minimise any disruption to the school traffic that would exist once the school year recommenced.

"The row of Mt Fuji Cherry trees was planted some eight years ago on the median strip, which was just bare grass, to enhance the Grey Street streetscape in the vicinity of the colleges. The median strip is fairly narrow and bakes very dry in summer with just the sealed road surface either side," Mr Edgar explained.

"Removing the existing grass and replacing it with mulch will be much healthier for the trees and will help ensure they grow to the street’s best advantage," Mr Edgar said.

Latrobe City’s Parks Officer, John Ruyg, said it had been difficult to keep enough moisture up to the trees while establishing them. "These white flowering cherries have the potential to look magnificent, and will be a real asset for the school community and neighbourhood aesthetics, especially in spring. Until now their growth has been somewhat impeded by the parched ground surface in summer which makes it difficult for what rain there is, to soak through to the trees’ root systems," Mr Ruyg said.

Asked whether the mulch would tend to be spread by wind or passing traffic, Mr Ruyg said that the first rain or two settled the mulch in place. "After that, the mulch in fact tends to reduce the amount of dust and leaf litter normally at large in the streetscape, by trapping those particles," Mr Ruyg said.
