Working To Repair Main Water Pipeline Serving Lindenow And Lindenow South

East Gippsland Water is working to repair a major break in the water pipeline serving customers in Lindenow and Lindenow South as soon as possible

By East Gippsland Water - 4th July 2007 - Back to News

A section of pipeline measuring around 120 metres, and buried under the bed of the Mitchell River, was severed and swept aside by the recent floods. It was scoured out from the river bed and broken by the sheer force of floodwater and heavy tree debris washing down the river system.

Staff are working to install a temporary pipeline as quickly as they can. In addition, work has commenced on some 160 metres of new, permanent mains pipeline, which will run at a much deeper level beneath the river. This could take several weeks to complete and the cost of the project is expected to be some $200,000.

Good quality drinking water supplies will continue to be trucked into the two townships until the mains supply is resumed.

Said East Gippsland Water’s Managing Director*, Les Mathieson: "Our staff are doing all they can to complete repairs as rapidly as possible. Meanwhile, we urge customers to continue helping us by using water sparingly to help conserve supplies and we greatly appreciate their cooperation during this difficult period."

East Gippsland Water is also reiterating its message to all customers in flood affected areas across the region (who are connected to a town water supply) that their drinking water remains perfectly safe to drink.

Staff have been pulling out all the stops over the past days to protect infrastructure and respond to incidents, to ensure a high quality of drinking water is maintained.

However, residents and visitors to the region need to be aware that floodwaters are likely to contain pollution from a number of sources. They need to take sensible precautions, which are being published by the Department of Human Services for example.

The 24 hour emergency number for East Gippsland Water customers to call to report a fault with their water supply is 1300 134 202. For other enquiries, please phone 1300 720 700.
