Help Manage Our Hoodies

Bass Coast Mayor, CR Jordan Crugnale, encourages the community to join the Hooded Plover Management workshop on June 25. Learn more about it.

Together with community groups, agencies, and interested individuals, Bass Coast Shire Council is gathering information on the vulnerably listed Hooded Plover.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Jordan Crugnale, said Council is aiming to develop two management strategies for the coordinated management of this species into the future.

"Hooded Plovers have recently been listed as a vulnerable species, and as such need special management," Cr Crugnale said.

"The birds begin breeding in September, with eggs being laid directly on the sand over the summer period, and the high use of Bass Coast beaches by humans and dogs over summer impact significantly on the breeding success of this vulnerable species."

A community workshop is being held on Saturday, 25 June from 11.00am until 2.00pm at the Newhaven Information Centre, Newhaven. Cr Crugnale encouraged members of the community with an interest in Hooded Plover management to come along to the community workshops and have their say.

The project is being run in collaboration with Birdlife Australia, Parks Victoria, Phillip Island Nature Parks, conservation groups, the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning (DELWP) and other valued stakeholders. All these groups and individuals play an important role in the management of Hooded Plovers across Bass Coast.

For more information about this project and to RSVP to the upcoming workshop, please contact Council’s Natural Resources Officer, David Martin, on d.martin@basscoast.vic.gov.au, (03) 5671 2774 or 1300 BCOAST (226 278).
