Cans for Fines to help Christmas charitiesIn the lead up to Christmas, the Latrobe City Library Service is waiving overdue library fines in return for donations of canned food. The cans will be distributed to a local charity in time for Christmas. By Latrobe Shire Council - 9th November 2004 - Back to News Latrobe City’s General Manager, City Relations, Mark Brady, said that all library branches in Latrobe City would accept cans of food in lieu of payment of fines.
"Until Saturday 4 December, for every canned food item donated, library users can take $2 off any accumulated fine. For those who owe less than $2, the fines will be wiped totally clean," Mr Brady explained.
Ms Stevenson added that library users and the wider Latrobe community were also invited to make donations to the charity hampers.
"The scheme is not limited to those who owe fines on library items. All donations will be gratefully received, however, perishable items cannot be accepted and this special offer is not available for lost library items," Mr Brady said.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that he hoped Latrobe’s library users would really get behind the scheme this year. "Last year, we received over 500 cans, along with cash donations and this really boosted the resources of the Salvation Army at a busy time of year. It would be great if residents could look in their cupboards for spare cans or tinned food items to donate and really make a difference this Christmas," Cr White concluded.
