Local artist explores Chinese culture

Latrobe Regional Gallery is currently hosting ‘Tailors and Temples’ an exhibition of multilayered and embellished prints by local artist Trish Leddin.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 8th April 2004 - Back to News

Ms Leddin’s work incorporates the themes of femininity, spiritualism and psychological states and closely explores her own experiences and personal values.

Latrobe Regional Gallery Director, Louise Tegart, said that Ms Leddin is influenced by Jung’s theories on the conscious and unconscious and she uses this as a framework for her art.

"When Ms Leddin spent some time in China she totally immersed herself in the country and culture and her natural curiosity led her on numerous journeys of the mind and senses. Whilst there, Ms Leddin discovered an incredibly interwoven and overlaid Chinese history that is informed by a myriad of complex belief systems, colourful mythology, opera, music, language, literature and magnificent visual art," Ms Tegart explained.

"This journey left her mind reeling with layers of imagery and stories and has strongly influenced her ideas, beliefs and her work," Ms Tegart said.

Ms Leddin’s work also incorporates various types of printing plates and techniques. Layering, concealment and mapping within her images are used as references to journeys and levels within the unconscious. Sewing and beading are also used unconventionally in her artwork to reinforce notions of the feminine.

"Ms Leddin works on numerous images at any one time and often one image leads into another, making links between and within her works. The colours red, purple and pink are used symbolically in the prints to evoke images associated with China and also to present the theme of femininity," Ms Tegart concluded.

Trish Leddin completed her Master of Visual Arts at Monash University’s Gippsland Centre for Art and Design in 2003. Her exhibition will run at Latrobe Regional Gallery until Sunday 25 April.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am-4pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700.
