New Boat Ramp For Mallacoota

A new single lane boat ramp and floating berthing jetty is to be built adjacent to the existing boat ramp at Karbeethong on the western shore of Mallacoota Inlet.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 9th February 2007 - Back to News

This follows a vote by East Gippsland Shire Councillors at their meeting last night.

In a report Councillors were advised that the existing single lane ramp is insufficient during high use periods and creates potential conflict and safety issues between boaters, pedestrian traffic and passing vehicles.

Shire acting group manager Infrastructure Gordon Charles said a second lane with a floating jetty would shorten the time spent waiting to launch or retrieve boats during busy periods.

"The floating jetty will also allow much improved access for people with special needs and make the ramp and associated facilities Access for All compliant." he said.

Marine Safety Victoria and the East Gippsland Shire will provide funding for the boat ramp that will be constructed by Jarvis Norwood Construction Pty Ltd.

The works will include excavation and preparation of the base for pre-cast concrete beams, fabrication and placement of the concrete beams, slabs and anchor beam, supply and installation of the floating jetty and its ramp and abutment including the driving of mooring piles.

Additional work will be carried out in the car park area and disability access will be provided to the toilet block.

Mayor Cr Mendy Urie said the new boat ramp would further enhance recreational boating at Mallacoota.

"It will help make this attractive holiday destination even more popular with visitors," she said.
