Microchipping day offers ‘cheap as chips’ pet security

Dog and cat owners can give their pets the gift of security by getting them microchipped at Latrobe City Council’s Microchipping Day this Sunday 14 March.

By Latrobe City Council - 10th March 2004 - Back to News

The Microchipping Day will be held at the Latrobe City Council Depot in Driffield Road, Morwell from 10am to 2pm. No appointments are necessary.

Latrobe City’s Manager, Local Laws, Peter Fraser, said this year’s Microchipping Day has been separated from the annual Million Paws Walk so that Latrobe City residents can get their animal chipped prior to Animal Registration Notices being issued.

"This will allow pet owners to take advantage of the lower registration fee for microchipped animals," Mr Fraser said.

"A microchip is the size of a grain of rice and is implanted into the folds of the skin at the back of an animal’s neck in a painless procedure carried out by a veterinarian. The barcode on the chip can be electronically scanned anywhere in Australia and links pet owners’ contact details to the Central Animal Records Database for the duration of a pet’s life," Mr Fraser explained.

"At a significantly discounted cost of $25 per animal, considering it provides peace of mind for owners for the life of their pet, it’s as cheap as chips," Mr Fraser said.

Mr Fraser said that it was in everybody’s best interest to get their pets microchipped.

"Having the microchip implanted can avoid unnecessary heartache for both owners and pets should an animal become lost. It can even avert the danger of the animal being rehoused or euthanased, should the animal shed its collar and registration tag and the owner be otherwise untraceable," Mr Fraser said.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, also urged dog and cat owners to put into practice responsible pet ownership by getting their pets microchipped.

"Microchipping provides peace of mind to owners and also guarantees that a higher number of pets can be returned quickly and safely if they go missing. This can significantly reduce the stress felt by both the pet and the owner if a pet strays from its home," Cr Middlemiss said.

Pet owners attending the microchipping day with their animals are asked to note that water will be provided for animals. Dogs must be kept on a lead and cats kept in a secure and suitable cage to ensure pet and owner safety at the Depot.

Driffield Road is located off Commercial Road Morwell, half a kilometre west of the Rose Garden.

Council’s microchipping day is being offered in conjunction with Microchips Australia.
