Sports Foundation To Make First Awards

Eight young East Gippsland sports people are about to receive a total of $10,000 worth of financial and practical assistance.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 28th August 2006 - Back to News

East Gippsland Sports Foundation Chairman Harvey Bates has announced that the first round of applications for assistance had now been finalised.

"We have interviewed the applicants with their parents and will announce the names as soon as they have been formally advised, "he said.

Harvey Bates said the Foundation’s Board had been delighted with the variety and calibre of applicants.

"We have some very talented young men and women in our region who are involved in a diverse range of sports," he said.

"The eight youngsters who have been successful show excellent prospects of reaching the elite level."

Harvey Bates said the overwhelming need was for assistance with their transport costs.

"Coaching and the need for high level competition require that the youngsters must regularly travel out of the East Gippsland region and this is becoming more and more costly for them," he said.

"It is mainly in this area that the Foundation will be able to provide practical and valuable help."
