Official Opening For Cann River Water Treatment Plant

Tuesday 22 July will see the official opening of East Gippsland Water’s new Cann River Water Treatment Plant, providing the township’s customers with higher quality drinking water supplies

By East Gippsland Water - 21st July 2008 - Back to News

The $1.6 million facility is designed to treat and improve on what has historically been a variable quality water supply. It is similar in cost and specification to water treatment plants opened in Bemm River and Buchan last year and in Cann River earlier this month.

All have been constructed as part of East Gippsland Water’s commitment to ensure long term security of drinking water supplies for the region’s smaller communities and to provide drinking water of consistently high quality.

Full treatment of ‘raw’ water is carried out using a Dissolved Air Flotation/Filtration Process – commonly referred to as the DAFF water treatment process. A coagulant is first added to the water to encourage colour and dirt particles to stick together to form larger, visible particles known as ‘floc’, which float to the surface and are skimmed off as sludge. This water is then filtered through sand and anthracite to further remove impurities and is disinfected before entering the reticulation system.

To ensure there is minimal wastage, the sludge is thickened and any water removed using ‘sludge dewatering geobags’. This reclaimed water is returned to the plant for treatment.

The local community has been invited to attend the Cann River Water Treatment Plant opening which is being conducted by East Gippsland Water’s Chairperson, Robert Fordham, who said: "The significant capital expenditure involved reflects our commitment to ensure all our customers enjoy high quality drinking water, regardless of whether they live in a large or small community. In the case of Cann River, some 200 properties will benefit from the initiative."
