Teachers Games Provide Financial BoostThe almost 2500 competitors in the Teachers Games that begin on Sunday have almost ‘booked out’ Bairnsdale and spilled over into Lakes Entrance according to Visitor Information Centre coordinator John Munns. By East Gippsland Shire Council - 19th September 2008 - Back to News "They’ve paid deposits on almost $35,000 worth of accommodation and we’re still taking calls every day," he said.
"We expect the games will provide an off season financial bonanza for all the businesses that cater for visitors."
Mr Munns said traders could expect increased demand for meals, drinks, fuel and depending on what the weather does, appropriate clothing.
"The business comes ahead of the summer season and at an ideal time for businesses coming out of the traditional winter slump," he said.
"It will soon be followed by the Barry Sheene Memorial ride that should provide a further stimulus to the local economy shortly after the games."
Mr Munns said the Games and motor cycle ride showed the value of "niche market’ events to the East Gippsland region.
"With our natural attractions as well as our infrastructure we are well placed to attract events of this kind it shows that when event organisers and the VIC's work together much can be achieved for the tourism industry."
