Toxic Roadshow – Let’S Take The Fight Up To Labor

Shadow Minister for Country Victoria, Philip Davis, has thrown his support behind this week’s No Mallee Toxic Waste Dump roadshow.

By Philip Davis - 2nd May 2005 - Back to News

Mr Davis praised the work of the Save the Food Bowl Alliance and Mildura Rural City Council for the initiative, which will follow the Bracks Government’s proposed route for the delivery of toxic waste to the proposed dump at Hattah-Nowingi.

"Perhaps the Bracks Government could use this opportunity to actually see first hand the regions they will affect with this proposal," Mr Davis said.

"In Parliament, I invited the Minister for Major Projects, John Lenders to visit Nowingi and see the site the Bracks Government is proposing to turn into a toxic waste dump.

"But he hasn’t taken up this offer."

Mr Davis said he, along with the Leader of the Liberal Party Robert Doyle, Shadow Environment Minister Phil Honeywood and Shadow Minister for Rural and Regional Development Denis Napthine had all inspected the site.

"We have visited the site, we have met with the Save the Food Bowl Alliance and we understand the concern behind the Bracks Government proposal to locate toxic waste in this sensitive environment," he said.

"John Lenders has responsibility for this project, so he should at least visit the site."

Mr Davis said the residents of Mildura do not want a toxic dump in their backyards, while those on the transport route are probably unaware of how the dump will affect them as well.

Mr Davis encouraged residents of Ouyen, Charlton, Wycheproof, Harcourt, Sea Lake, Culgoa, Wedderburn, Kyneton, Inglewood, Gisborne, Woodend, Marong and Bendigo to seek as much information as possible about how the toxic dump will affect them from the roadshow when it travels through their towns this week.

He also encouraged Bendigo residents to participate in the rally that has been organised on Friday at noon, outside the Shamrock Hotel.

"Victorians must stand up and show the Bracks Government that we don’t want a toxic waste dump in Nowingi," he said.
