$500,000 For Waterline Infrastructure In Bass Coast

Bass Coast Shire’s waterline infrastructure will receive a major boost after the State Government announced over $500,000 in funding last week.

Minister for Ports, David Hodgett, visited the region last Wednesday to announce funding for a new jetty in Cowes and jetty repairs and replacement pontoon in Rhyll. He also took the opportunity to inspect the Inverloch jetty upgrade, partially funded by the State Government, which was completed in November last year.

Council was successful in receiving a $378,000 grant through the government’s Boating Safety and Facilities Program for construction of the new jetty at the Cowes Boat Ramp, in addition to Council’s contribution of $150,000.

Mayor, Cr Neil Rankine, said Council was pleased with the funding, which would be combined with Council funding to allow construction of the jetty to go ahead.

"The jetty will enable safer launching and retrieval at the Anderson Road facility and will allow boating opportunities for people who currently cannot use the boat ramp," Cr Rankine said.

Cr Rankine said Council oversaw the development of the draft construction plans for the jetty and is now seeking final feedback on the draft plans prior to adoption.

"This design was largely influenced by information gained at several community information sessions and stakeholder discussions held last year," Cr Rankine said.

"Once the plans are finalised, Council will seek approval from the Department of Environment and Primary Industries, and Parks Victoria. Once we have these permits, we will be ready to commence construction."

It is anticipated that the project will be completed in time for summer 2014/15.

Work at the Rhyll jetty floating pontoon and jetty repairs began this week.

"We are very pleased that this work is taking place, as it will provide much improved facilities to the thousands of people who use it", said Cr Rankine.
