Latrobe River Bridge at Tyers had completion delayed to August 2024 frustrating residents with safety concerns

The completion of the Latrobe River Bridge at Tyers faces ongoing delays. Initially promised for January, Minister for Roads Melissa Horne revised the date to April, then successively to May, June, July, and now August.

In a turn of events that everyone saw coming, completion of the Latrobe River Bridge at Tyers has been delayed again. After initially advising installation of permanent barriers on the new bridge would happen in January, Minister for Roads, Melissa Horne, revised the project delivery date to April.

• Then July
• Now it's August

"I have received word that there has been an issue with 'regalvanising the bridge barriers', which would explain why parts of the railing inexplicably went missing along with workers who were meant to be on site," The Nationals' Member for Morwell, Martin Cameron said.

The absence of permanent barriers on the bridge poses a safety risk. A resident had to reverse to make way, highlighting issues with Labor's management of regional roads

Safety risks remain unresolved

Mr Cameron said, "This information has been pried out of Regional Roads Victoria from fed-up residents who have emailed repeatedly to ask for updates, only to be ignored. We have now been told that workers will be back on site this month to install the permanent barriers, 'expected' to be finished in August. With every day that passes the lack of permanent barriers on the bridge poses an unacceptable safety risk to road users."

"One resident was forced to stop and reverse her car off the bridge so an oncoming truck could pass safely because there is not enough room for two vehicles to pass safely if one is oversized. Labor can't manage money, can't manage regional roads, and Victorians are paying the price," he said.
