Council Supports RAAF BaseWellington Shire Council has acknowledged the extra activity from the Sale RAAF base due to the added security required during the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. By Wellington Shire Council - 21st March 2006 - Back to News Wellington Shire Council has acknowledged the extra activity from the Sale RAAF base due to the added security required during the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
"It is regretted that the world situation requires this level of security, but we welcome the extra crews and aircraft at the base," said Wellington Shire Council Mayor, Cr Malcolm Hole.
Extra aircraft and personnel are based in Sale as part of the security for the Commonwealth Games.
"I am pleased our local RAAF base could play a role in the success of the Commonwealth Games."
"I ask local residents to be tolerant of the unusual operations from the base for the duration of the Games.
"I believe the activity reaffirms the RAAF commitment to the base as an important and permanent defence facility."
"We would hope this temporary lift in the use of the base encourages the government to consider Sale as an option for the permanent relocation or expansion of future RAAF training and maintenance facilities," said Cr Hole.
"Council has worked very hard to retain the base as part of our local economy, and has put a great deal of effort in recent years into encouraging the expansion and new development of the base.
"We have enjoyed some real success with the imminent relocation of training facilities from Point Cook to Sale.
"Community support for the base during this time will strengthen Council’s position in its quest for the relocation of additional training schools to the base," said Cr Hole.
