Seven young people recently graduated from the 2005 Latrobe City Youth Council program. The graduates were junior mayor - Melissa Forlano, deputy junior mayor - Megan Dyke, Katherine Watt, Brock Holcombe, Jordan Dunstone, Ricky Sinclair and Kaitlin Duffus.

Latrobe City’s youth services officer, Chris Larsen, said the Latrobe City Youth Council program is about young people developing leadership skills and having a say about their community, their needs and their visions.

"Program objectives include providing a forum for young people to meet regularly and express their views on issues affecting them and their peers; and providing an opportunity for young people to liaise with Council representatives and leaders within the Latrobe City municipality," Chris explained.

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said that the graduates have shown a great deal of initiative during their time on Youth Council, especially when planning events within Latrobe City and working with Latrobe City staff.

"They have also demonstrated their ability and skills to be the voice of young people in our municipality. Their ability to speak at launches and to have a voice has shown the dedication and skills obtained by being a Youth Council representative," Cr Price said.

Some of the 2005 Youth Council Program achievements include the successful completion of a community project which involved talking to primary school aged children about recycling, taking up local issues with Council, participation at the Reconciliation Week barbecue, involvement with and participation at the Australian Sister Cities Conference, a presentation at the launch of Latrobe 2021, and participation in and assistance with the planning of Freeza events.

A new Youth Council will be recruited for 2006. Expressions of interest will be sought in February 2006 through local secondary schools, youth agencies and the local media. Enquiries for the 2006 Youth Council program can be directed to Chris Larsen, youth services officer, telephone 1300 367 700.
