Working Together to Fix FloodingThe Phillip Island Golf Club is struggling to cope with the effects of the heaviest May rainfall recorded in 20 years. By Bass Coast - 18th May 2012 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council’s Infrastructure Director, Felicity Sist, said the rainfall is just one factor contributing to the issues experienced by the Club in recent weeks.
"The Golf Course and properties in that area are routinely very wet during periods of rain," explained Ms Sist.
"The average rainfall for May is 70mm, but already we have had more than 120mm this month, which has put a big strain on drainage facilities. Unfortunately you cannot just point to one factor and say this is what is causing the problem. There are quite a few issues contributing to flooding in the area.
"The Golf Club, Council, Melbourne Water and the developers of the Shearwater Estate are working together to find a solution and I’ve been very pleased with the level of cooperation between all the parties."
Ms Sist rejected suggestions that roadworks by Council had contributed to the flood.
"This month, properties near the intersection of Coghlan and Settlements Roads which normally flood during heavy rain, did not. So the roadwork on Settlement Road seems to have improved the situation, at least in part.
"Investigations show that the outlet from the Golf Club into the Settlement Road and Shearwater Estate drainage system may have exacerbated flooding at the Club’s car park," explained Ms Sist.
"The Club and the developer have been looking at how this can be addressed."
Council is also concerned about maintenance and cleaning of the major drains in the area, which we have reported to Melbourne Water, who is the responsible authority.
"Some obstruction of the outfall drain has contributed to the flooding issues in the area."
Ms Sist said the relevant parties would continue to work together to find the best possible resolution to the issues.
