Local Joinery Delights National Bakery Franchise

Long established Morwell business, Hazelwood Joinery, has forged a niche market across Australia through its work for the well known national franchise, Bakers Delight.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 5th May 2004 - Back to News

Hazelwood Joinery has now completed over 200 units for Bakers Delight stores across Australia in the past three years.

Hazelwood Joinery Managing Director, Russell Jones, said each unit comprised bread racks, bulkheads and the counters.

"No two shop locations are the same so the units are all to a specific size and dimension while still retaining the clean, golden brown and chrome corporate colours," Mr Jones explained.

Mr Jones said that the connection with Bakers Delight really commenced when it was decided to standardise the joinery in their bread outlets nationally.

"We had already built some units for Bakers Delight prior to becoming their preferred supplier. They knew about our capabilities and systematic approach to manufacturing, and that we always delivered on time."

According to Latrobe City Investment Manager, Leo Billington, Hazelwood Joinery competed with other strong contenders to win the contract.

"Competition was extremely keen, especially from joinery firms in Brisbane and Sydney, so it is to their credit that a Latrobe City based business came through and won. Developing the tender required a great deal of work, largely managed by Hazelwood Joinery Manager, Rod Warren," Mr Billington said.

Hazelwood Joinery’s heritage was established in 1976 and over the past 28 years, the business has specialised in domestic, commercial and industrial joinery construction. Now employing about 30 people, the Bakers Delight contract requires doing the design work, and then building the modules to fit the space available wherever a franchise outlet is located.

"We work in close consultation with a Bakers Delight drafting team and we have perfected the modular system which is then fitted by another contractor," Mr Jones explained.

"The modules are therefore easy to transport in containers and for this we use Moe based transport company, Wyke and Sons."

The latest two units to be completed have just been dispatched to new Bakers Delight stores in Maitland and Bondi Junction and more will be manufactured over the coming months. Perth and Darwin have been the further most locations to which units have been sent in previous years.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said the success of Hazelwood Joinery was another fine example of Latrobe City businesses being nationally recognised for their leadership in their area of expertise.

"It is also very encouraging to see local businesses working together to help each other maintain work and employment within our municipality while making a name for themselves on a national scale," Cr White said.
