Walking School Bus Is Up And Rolling The Rose Avenue Walking School Bus in Cowes is up and rolling thanks to local volunteer Katja Taylor and her passengers, Amber, Nina and Eddie. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 19th March 2009 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council’s Walking School Bus Facilitator, Lisa Archibald, said that on this ‘bus’ the kids ride to school with their volunteer conductor.
"This bus is a riding school bus which has been rolling round Cowes for over six months now," said Ms Archibald.
"Children on this bus are encouraged to ride as a great option for staying healthy and for the environment.
"Katja and the children operate the bus Tuesday to Friday, both in the morning and afternoon, come rain or shine.
"As with all Walking School Bus routes, the Riding Bus welcomes newcomers, both volunteers and children," continued Ms Archibald.
The Walking School Bus program aims to change the travel patterns of primary school aged children by offering a safe and supervised alternative to car travel.
"We have Walking School Bus routes in Cowes and Inverloch and we encourage any adult or child interested in participating in the program to contact us," said Ms Archibald
The Rose Avenue bus runs from Rose Avenue in Cowes then travels along Stradbroke Avenue, up Dunsmore to Church Street, onto Shamrock Avenue then across Settlement Road to the primary school.
Over the coming weeks, Walking School Bus brochures will be distributed with school newsletters in Cowes, Newhaven and Inverloch. The brochures include information on the program, forms for volunteers and child registration as well as maps of local routes.
For more information regarding the Rose Avenue Route or about becoming part of the program on any other routes in the Shire, contact Council’s Walking School Bus Facilitator Lisa Archibald on 1300 BCOAST(226 278)
