Community Squares: A Creative MessageThe Wellington community is putting out a message that will be creative, colourful and very, very different By Karen Gregory - 29th October 2002 - Back to News The Shire’s planning group for the International Day of People with a DisAbility is asking everyone to get busy making calico squares to form a quilt/banner with the theme "Quilt of Understanding – Celebrating Community Connections".
Anyone can help by simply asking for a 12-inch square of calico and decorating it however they like – from drawing to creating an elaborate tapestry of embroidery or applique – so that everyone can see what your community connections mean to you.
Wellington Shire RuralAccess Project Officer Frances Ford is hoping for a large response to make the final quilt as large and colourful as possible.
"Everybody in our community has a lot to offer, whatever our age, level of ability or background. The more we are connected to others in our community, the healthier our communities are", she said..
"We all need strong supportive social networks and our community is the richer for having such a range of groups and organisations making a contribution."
Calico squares and information sheets are available from reception at the Wellington Shire Civic Centre between 8.30am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday, or may be obtained by phoning Lisa Lyndon at the Shire on 5142 3326. Squares are also available from Sale Country Womens’ Association, 67D Macarthur St, Sale any Wednesday or Thursday from 10.00am and 3.00pm,.
Closing date for squares is 19 November,and you can see a window display of panels or watch our craft co-op putting the quilt together at Sale CWA from then.
The quilt/banner will be launched at the Sale Uniting Church Hall on Friday 6 December over afternoon tea at 3pm. This event will follow a combined churches service 'Celebration of Ability’ which people of all faiths (or none) are welcome to attend. It will then be widely displayed throughout Wellington Shire.
