Council cracks down on unregistered pets

Wellington Shire Council is urging dog and cat owners who have still not registered their pets to do so as soon as possible to avoid the prospect of a $205 fine.

By Wellington Shire Council - 10th June 2005 - Back to News

State legislation now requires cats and dogs to be registered from the age of three months.

Wellington has one of the lowest pet registration fees among municipalities in Victoria and animal registration carries many benefits including an increased chance of reuniting lost pets with their owner.

Renewal notices were issued to pet owners in March. While the vast majority of pet owners have acted responsibly and registered their animals, there are a number who still have not renewed dog and cat registrations, or registered new pets, even though the deadline was 10 April. Now the council is about initiate a crackdown on these owners.

Pet owners who have animals that have died or left the shire in recent years are urged to contact the council so records can be updated.

Staff will be undertaking a series of activities in the coming weeks across the shire to ensure pet owners register their animals - including door knocks where owners of pets found to be unregistered face the prospect of an on-the-spot fine.

Unregistered pets or pets not displaying their registration tag run the risk of not being identified if found wandering and ending up in the pound.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault: "We are encouraging pet owners to ensure they register cats and dogs for the safety and well-being of their animals. Registration is an important part of caring for your pet, and most importantly it assists the council with returning lost pets home."

For more information about pet registrations and responsible pet ownership please telephone Wellington Shire Council on 1300 366 244.
