Special wheelchairs at Seaspray transform access to beach

Thanks to a community partnering initiative involving Wellington Shire Council, specially designed wheelchairs enabling easy access to the beach for those with disabilities are being introduced at Seaspray from Saturday 29 November.

It will be the first time such a service has been made available to those with disabilities in country Victoria.

The two wheelchairs feature extra-wide wheels, making it much easier to push them across sand. Together worth $5,000, they have been funded jointly by the Council and the Lions Club of Sale, with the project sponsored by the Seaspray Reserves Management Committee.

They will be available free of charge to users, seven days a week, from 11am onwards, at the Seaspray Surf Lifesaving Club.

Said Wellington’s Mayor John Jago: "We are delighted to support this very worthwhile initiative, which should prove a real boon to those with a disability, making it much easier for them to get access to the beach and enhancing their quality of life."

Anyone who would like more information on the wheelchairs should contact Kevin Young of Seaspray Reserves Management Committee on 5144 3798.
