Latrobe City Council Adopts Economic Sustainability Strategy 2011 – 2015

Latrobe City Council’s Economic Sustainability Strategy 2011 – 2015 was adopted at Monday night’s Council meeting.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White said that the strategy would play a key role in working towards Latrobe 2026 the community vision for Latrobe City.

"The strategy provides the framework by which Council will work with our community to cultivate sustainable economic development in Latrobe City and contribute to the delivery of the liveable, vibrant and enterprising region described in the Latrobe 2026 community vision," Cr White said.

"Developed over the last 12 months with the input from the business sector and key government stakeholders The strategy is a blueprint for how Council will work with our community, industry, small business and government partners to drive economic growth and achieve positive results.

"The key outcomes of the strategy are consolidating and expanding our position as a major regional city within Victoria and the centre point of Gippsland’s economy, continued job creation and reduced unemployment rate, growth in gross regional product and smooth transition to a low carbon economy," Cr White said.

Latrobe City Council’s manager economic sustainability, Mr Geoff Hill said that the strategy outlines some key successes for Latrobe City.

"The strategy identifies recent successes including the fact that Latrobe City has the highest annualised employment growth rate of Victoria’s 4 Regional Cities at 4.98%. Ballarat’s employment growth is 3.55%, Bendigo at 3.43%, and Geelong -0.55%.

"The strategy identifies priorities for Council’s economic sustainability service and reinforces the work that has already been done in this area," Mr Hill said.

"The adopted strategy provides a strong direction for the next 5 years for Council to continue to develop Latrobe City’s sustainably, reinforce its role as one Victoria’s key regional centres and a great place to live, work and invest," Cr White concluded.
