Level of expectation on Government delivery Latrobe City Council remains confident that strong initiatives will be undertaken by the State Government to provide assistance to the Latrobe Valley. By Latrobe City Council - 4th May 2001 - Back to News Latrobe City Council remains confident that in spite of Gippsland being overlooked as the site for the transfer of State Revenue Office offices, strong initiatives will be undertaken by the State Government to provide assistance to the Latrobe Valley.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said that the State Government’s decision to transfer two-hundred and thirty State Revenue Office jobs to Ballarat was welcomed from the perspective of assisting regional employment, but insisted that Latrobe should have been considered.
"Unfortunately, I have to say that the State Government did not reveal that the State Revenue Office move was in the offing, so regional areas such as ourselves were unable to make a bid," Cr Jenkins explained.
"Quality jobs of this nature provide far reaching additional benefits for the region. Not only is there an immediate boost to the local economy, but additional jobs tend to be created in the wake of positive development initiatives of this calibre," Cr Jenkins said.
"230 professional jobs would deliver a government guaranteed benefit in excess of $18 million in salary, with a similar figure flowing in consumables, capital, and ancillary activity," Cr Jenkins said.
"This means, the move will provide a boost of $35 million every year for the Ballarat community. It’s a great win for Ballarat, but importantly for Latrobe it’s the clearest indication yet of the sort of initiatives which should be the focus of the State Government Latrobe Valley Taskforce.
"The State Government’s action in transferring premium infrastructure to Ballarat has raised the bar as far as the level of expectation for this region is concerned. If the Government can provide two-hundred and thirty quality jobs for Ballarat, with an annual value in excess of $35million, then the people of Latrobe City should have the high expectation of similar project initiatives out of the Latrobe Valley Taskforce," Cr Jenkins concluded.
