following adoption of the terms of reference at Monday night’s ordinary council meeting.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said that in May last year, Council adopted its Positive Ageing Plan 2009-2012.

"A task within this plan was the establishment of the Positive Ageing Reference Group and subsequent linkages of this group to other community groups for older people.

"There are many ways in which the group will be able to service the needs of the older community. Members of the group will include independent community representatives, relevant agency and community group representatives, Councillors and Latrobe City staff.

"Amongst its roles, the group will be able to, in partnership with other providers, look at ways to improve transport services so they meet the needs of older people as well as investigating the opportunity to further promote the community grants program with older people. Indeed, the group will discuss and advise on any issues that may affect older people’s participation in community life," Cr O’Callaghan explained.

"We hope the group will strive to achieve public recognition of the outstanding contribution to community life that older residents are giving. They may look for ways to develop a plan for permanent and temporary memorials, activities or installations to ensure that older people are not the forgotten members of our society, but that they are highly regarded, respected and valued.

"Expressions of interest for representation on the Positive Ageing Reference Group will be advertised in the Council Noticeboard in the Latrobe Valley Express and on Latrobe City’s website. Council will also write to relevant agencies and community groups to request nominations for the group. A selection panel will then shortlist and select representatives.

"The establishment of this group will give a voice to the older members of our community who have given and are still giving to society in many ways, be it through work, family, volunteering or just through the experience of living. Their needs are still valid and we must, as a society, ensure that they are met," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.
