The Traralgon Sports Stadium, co-host of the 2006 Commonwealth Games, will again set the scene for more elite basketball.

By Latrobe City Council - 17th August 2006 - Back to News

The stadium will host a pre-season game between the defending National Basketball League champions the Melbourne Tigers, and the Cairns Taipans in a highly anticipated night on court on Thursday 24 August.

The Melbourne Tigers are bringing the game to Traralgon as a part of their preparations for the upcoming 2006-07 NBL season and are excited to continue their allegiance with the area.

Melbourne Tigers Head Coach Al Westover has said that he is looking forward to the game and also to returning to Latrobe City. "We have had a few basketball camps and other pre season games down at Traralgon in the past and we have always been well supported" Mr Westover said.

"It is great when we can take basketball to the regional areas and give the fans something back, and this is definitely one of those occasions" Mr Westover added.

Westover believes that the game will be extremely important as a part of the pre season, and in a lead up to the teams title defence. "Pre season games are vitally important to the preparation of the team and we will be taking the game very seriously" Mr Westover added.

Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Lisa Price, has said that it is wonderful to see the Traralgon Sports Stadium being used by elite athletes. "It also provides an opportunity for residents of Latrobe City to witness sport at the highest level being played in their own backyard. Latrobe City is pleased to be host of elite sporting teams from all sports, and to have national basketball back in Latrobe City is wonderful" Cr Price said.

Tickets to the game are available through the Box Office on (03) 5176 3559 or by email: boxoffice@latrobe.vic.gov.au. Prices: Adult $16, Child $12, Family $45, Group Booking (10 people) $104.
