„h Economic Sustainability Strategy 2015-19 & Implementation Toolbox project to support businesses and attract investment in the region.

„h The Regional Growth Fund has delivered more than $400 million, generating well over $1.6 billion of total investment across almost 1500 projects.

The Victorian Coalition Government is investing $70,000 from the $1 billion Regional Growth Fund to help Latrobe City Council develop a five-year economic plan.

Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the project would employ a consultant to prepare an economic sustainability strategy and implementation plan to support business and investment activity from 2015-19.

¡§This important project will enable Latrobe City to both plan and effectively implement key economic development strategies, delivering multiple benefits to the community and business sectors,¡¨ Mr Northe said.

¡§The new plan will consolidate Latrobe City as a major industrial centre for Victoria and focal point for Gippsland¡¦s economy by generating employment growth and reducing the region¡¦s unemployment rate.

¡§It will encourage businesses to become more productive through the use of technology and seek to attract further State and Commonwealth investment. And it will ensure a smooth transition to a low carbon economy.

¡§The council¡¦s current economic strategy has been pivotal in achieving a number of identified priorities but needs more detail to implement key economic development priorities.¡¨

Mr Northe said the consultant would develop an ¡§Implementation Toolbox¡¨ which would provide a suite of techniques to address the objectives of job creation and economic sustainability.

¡§The strategy will define opportunities for high quality jobs that will contribute to a diversified industry base and the future resilience of the economy,¡¨ he said.

¡§Stakeholders, such as the Victorian and Australian Governments; regional and specialist education institutions; the electricity and coal derivative sectors; and the retail and tourism sectors and industry peak bodies, will be consulted in the development of the strategy and toolbox.¡¨

Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson, said that funding for the economic plan was key to ensuring that job creation remained a focus for the municipality.

¡§We need to ensure that our region benefits from investment opportunities. This plan will help put a focus on bringing industry, commerce, investors and other business development prospects to Latrobe City. The implementation toolbox will ensure we have the capacity to encourage this sort of investment into our region and to retain it for long term economic growth,¡¨ Cr Gibson said.
