Submissions invited on preferred option for precinct

Latrobe City Council is seeking public comment on its preferred option for the future use of the Traralgon civic buildings and precinct following the move of the administration centre to Morwell scheduled for March 2005.

By Latrobe City Council - 28th November 2003 - Back to News

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said Council had resolved its preferred option at its November meeting and was now advertising for public comments before final decisions are made and design details are prepared.

Features of the proposed option include the relocation of the Traralgon Library from the Kath Teychenne centre to the current civic offices. "The Library would be co-located with the Traralgon Service Centre," Cr Middlemiss explained.

"This would deliver a more spacious library for the Traralgon community, a move that has been keenly sought by library users for many years.

Cr Middlemiss said the preferred option incorporated retention of the Traralgon Function Room and Council Chambers. "While the municipal administration will be coordinated centrally under one roof, resulting in greater efficiencies, our civic presence in Traralgon would remain an integral part of the way that this Council and the community come together," Cr Middlemiss said. The Council Chamber would continue to play the same role in civic affairs as is does at the moment," Cr Middlemiss said.

The Traralgon Neighbourhood Learning Centre would be relocated to the Kath Teychenne Centre and a new Maternal and Child Health Centre would be established in the North Wing, the former municipal library.

Cr Middlemiss said the West Wing, which comprises the former Traralgon Shire offices would be removed, so that extended car parking for the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre could be developed. "We see a very bright future for the performing arts in Latrobe City and with the recent refurbishment of the Performing Arts Centre in Traralgon, we can now attract productions that cater for larger audiences and accommodate those audiences with additional infrastructure."

Councillor Middlemiss said the preferred option delivered on the commitment to retain the civic precinct as an entity. "I urge the community to review the preferred option and make submissions or comment as they see fit, so that we can consider these while developing final designs and details," Cr Middlemiss added.

Copies of the report associated with the preferred option are available from Council’s Service Centres in Traralgon, Moe and Morwell; or by contacting Latrobe City Council, telephone 1300 367 700.

Submissions or comments on the preferred option should be forwarded to: The Chief Executive Officer, Latrobe City Council, PO Box 345, TRARALGON 3844; by Friday 19 December 2003. These will be collated and presented to Council at its February 2004 Ordinary Meeting for consideration. Further information is available from Latrobe City’s General Manager City Strategy, Paul Buckley, telephone 1300 367 700.
