Responsible Gambling Forum To Be Held In MorwellKnowledge, balance and control will be the key themes of a Responsible Gambling Forum to be held from 10am to 1pm at Latrobe City Council Headquarters in Morwell on Thursday 28 May. By Latrobe City Council - 21st May 2009 - Back to News An invitation is extended to all government and corporate stakeholders, community group representatives, families of gamblers and the general community to attend the forum.
The forum will be held as part of ‘Responsible Gambling Awareness Week’; a collaborative event between the Department of Justice, the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation, Latrobe Community Health Service and Latrobe City Council.
Phil Shelton from the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation will speak at the forum about the odds against winning and the risks of gambling.
Sara Hare from Shottler Consulting will present extracts from her social research on Victorian adults’ attitudes and behaviours towards gambling; and a spokesperson from the Responsible Gambling Awareness Week will also be in attendance.
Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Lisa Price said Responsible Gambling Awareness Week was an important campaign, aimed at encouraging people to take a responsible approach to gambling.
"Responsible Gambling is a key issue in Victoria, and this awareness week stresses the need for gamblers to stay in control when gambling, while also providing them with information about the extensive support services available, should they require assistance," Cr Price said.
‘Gambler’s Help Service’ which can be accessed through Latrobe Community Health Service throughout Gippsland is participating in Responsible Gambling Week in Latrobe City.
Anne-Maree Kaser, director community support at Latrobe Community Health Service said a responsible gambling brochure is available from Latrobe Community Health Service.
"The brochure has a quiz which allows people to assess for themselves whether their gambling behaviour is becoming a problem.
"If you are concerned that your own gambling is becoming a problem or you are worried about a friend, family member or workmate, then Gambler’s Help is available to assist you. We can be contacted by phoning 1800 242 696 or by coming into any of our eight Latrobe Community Health Service sites throughout Gippsland. Our service is free, confidential and non-judgemental. For people with problem gambling behaviours, we can offer both counselling and financial counselling," Ms Kaser said.
