Latrobe Regional Gallery takes tea

Images which have the potential to ‘stir memory’ are highlighted in the current exhibition being held in the International Power Hazelwood Community Access Gallery, at the Latrobe Regional Gallery.

By Latrobe City Council - 11th April 2006 - Back to News

Latrobe Regional Gallery’s assistant curator, Sherryn Vardy, said that in the exhibition ‘Reflection at tea time’, local artist Julia Crawford uses digitally enhanced photographs to comment on the ceremonial nature of taking tea.

"Tea cups portrayed within these works are family heirlooms or personal treasures which have a story to tell," Ms Vardy commented.

"Light and shadow play a key role in the work with each image being devised by capturing random reflections from a window. The colour within the photographs has been intensified creating a surreal environment.

"Julia Crawford wishes to evoke the sensorial and explore the imagination and memories that result in the tradition of taking tea," Ms Vardy said.

‘Reflection at tea time’ is now open for viewing and continues until Sunday 23 April 2006. Also on show are two newly opened exhibitions: ‘Rodney Forbes 1995-2005’ and ‘All Prize Winners Paraded-Jo Grant’.

Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm, and on weekends 11am to 4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700. Entry is free.
