Entertainment Centre Bonus For Community Groups

Community groups have the chance to perform in the Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre’s superb John Leslie Theatre at up to $1,200 off their total bill.

By Wellington Shire Council - 27th July 2005 - Back to News

The exciting opportunity is part of Wellington Shire Council’s Venue Assistance Scheme, which helps not-for-profit community groups run their event in the award-winning centre.

Cr Darren McCubbin, Chair of the Advisory Centre Committee, said: "We are keen to get more of our community to access this great venue for their events. The centre comes with so much professional support, marketing assistance and great quality infrastructure that groups will find it’s easy to make a fantastic event.

"The centre’s award-winning building includes the beautiful 400-seat John Leslie Theatre with comfort and great views from every seat and of course the great food and atmosphere."

He said the $20,000 scheme was driven by long-time arts supporter John Leslie.

Cr McCubbin said that while the actual use of the space was free, there would be some charges (at a community rate) for technical and front of house staff, ticketing and some additional services.

"We do require that community groups use a minimum of one of our technical staff when they are using the theatre, and that’s because the space is not like your normal hall where you can give somebody a key and ask them to lock up when they finish. This is a fair dinkum, all bells and whistles performance space with specialist equipment and safety requirements."

He said successful groups could use the venue for two nights as part of the scheme, saving themselves more than $1200 in rental fees compared to the normal community rate.

"The scheme is aimed at encouraging new groups to use the centre."

Cr McCubbin said the scheme was open to all of not-for-profit community groups including local schools, sporting groups as well as music, drama and arts groups.

"But it’s not just performance-related, community groups who want to hold a conference or an information session in the theatre are also welcome to apply."

Application forms for the Venue Assistance Scheme are available on the Council’s website at: www.wellington.vic.gov.au and interested groups can contact Manager Kirsty Ellem on 5142 3312 for further information.
