They will work with the ten Landcare Groups across the Bass Coast Shire mainland area, from Anderson’s Inlet to San Remo and north through the catchments of the Powlett and Bass Rivers.
Jodie and Moragh will share the position and work with local Landcare Groups to continue the successful Landcare program. They said that as well as working on current projects they will also develop new initiatives to support farmers and landholders who are endeavouring to look after the land.
Landcare in Bass Coast Shire has a strong history. Landcare groups have operated in the area for over thirteen years with membership that includes farmers, local residents and urban volunteers.
Over the past thirteen years, more than 600,000 indigenous plants have been planted on farms through the Landcare Program to protect creeks and waterways and to address landslips, erosion and salinity. Other Landcare activities include weed and pest animal control, and adopting farming methods that improve productivity while protecting the land.
Jodie and Moragh are currently located at Council’s Wonthaggi office but a Landcare office will soon be established in a new location. The office will be a place for Landcare members to meet, talk with the coodinators, discuss land management issues and use the library resources.
Jodie and Moragh will also be visiting community centres and halls across the municipality to make themselves more available to the farming community. They will start these visits on August 28 at the Cape Patterson Community Hall. A timetable of these visits is available by contacting either Jodie or Moragh at Council on 5671 2211 or 5951 3311. The Coordinator position will be managed by a steering committee that includes representatives from the Landcare Groups, Bass Coast Shire Council, Westernport Water and South Gippsland Water.
