Ingram calls on Premier to address timber issues

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has asked Premier Steve Bracks to meet face-to-face with local timber communities.

Speaking in Parliament this week, Mr Ingram said the State Government was conducting further reviews into the timber industry, which may affect resource security.

"These reviews come after the disastrous ‘Our Forests, Our Future’ (OFOF) program, and the new online timber auction system," Mr Ingram said.

In Parliament, Mr Ingram said the government's timber industry reforms continue to cause significant hardship and uncertainty to licensees, businesses, timber communities and timber workers.

"The Premier must visit East Gippsland and meet first hand with affected communities, businesses and timber workers to prevent any further disastrous timber reforms," Mr Ingram said.

"It is essential the government understands the importance of the timber industry to East Gippsland."

Mr Ingram said that he had also met with the Minister Jacinta Allan to discuss outstanding tax liabilities from workers who received OFOF payments.

"The State Government has a responsibility to ensure that those affected will not be left out of pocket," Mr Ingram concluded.
