Council staff set healthy example

Wellington Shire Council staff are taking their new Healthy Lifestyle unit quite literally.

By Wellington Shire Council - 7th October 2005 - Back to News

Inspired by the Shire’s Walking School Bus project worker Renee Heath, several staff members are putting their best foot forward by participating in Walk to Work Day on Friday, October 7.

The intrepid workers will walk from all parts of Sale to get to work.

Wellington’s Manager Healthy Lifestyles John Tatterson said: "It’s great to see so many Wellington Shire Council staff setting such a great example and showing others how easy it can be to make a healthy lifestyle choice.

"Walking is easy, free and a great way to achieve better health and well-being," he said. "The benefits are enormous because regular walking can lift your mood, aid uninterrupted sleep, increase energy, decrease fatigue and lead to an improved sense of wellbeing."

Mr Tatterson said there was no better time to take up walking than the present.

"With the price of petrol escalating, walking to work will help save you dollars at the bowser. And according to the latest research, as little as 30 minutes of walking a day can break the cycle of depression and anxiety."

Now in its eighth year, Walk to Work Day is an initiative of the Pedestrian Council of Australia (PCA). The event is supported by the Heart Foundation, Diabetes Australia, the Cancer Council and beyondblue.

Wellington Shire’s Healthy Lifestyle unit was created last month as part of a restructure at the Council offices. The new unit replaced Leisure Services and reflects the Council’s commitment to encouraging residents to lead healthy lifestyles through proper exercise and diet.
