Life Saving Victoria's 2024-25 Drowning Report highlights shocking increases in aquatic tragedies revealing 52 deaths and 123 non-fatal drownings in just one year, with sharp increases among young people and older adults, multicultural communities over-represented, and a spike in incidents outside the traditional summer peak.

  • 52 fatal and 123 non-fatal drowning incidents, both above 10-year averages
  • Highest drowning rates in more than a decade during traditionally cooler months
  • Drownings among young people are 27 per cent higher than the decade average
  • Seniors are drowning at a rate significantly higher than the general population

Hotter, longer seasons, poor swimming skills, medical issues and people entering water alone or outside patrolled areas are driving a crisis that cuts across rivers, lakes, beaches and backyard pools. Six people have drowned in Victoria in the past month alone, our worst ever spring and a tragic reminder of how fast a day by the water can turn deadly.
