The Bass Coast community recently celebrated World Environment Day at a three-day expo held at the San Remo Recreation Centre.

The expo focused on both local and global environmental issues, with displays presented by sixteen agencies and community groups involved in environmental management, education, appreciation and action.

"More than 500 local school students attended the event," said Bass Coast Shire Council’s Environmental/Coastal Officer, Derek Hibbert.

As well as investigating each of the static displays, the school groups were treated to as many as four different interpretative presentations on issues such as waste education, whole farm planning and the heritage of the Bunurong people.

Younger students participated in environmental games that incorporated themes such as coastal protection and the impacts of weeds.

Some students participated in an interpretative trek along the George Bass Coastal Walk, or beachcombs along the San Remo foreshore.

The Expo was organised by the Bass Coast Environmental Alliance; a group formed by agencies in the Bass Coast region in order to coordinate, promote and conduct environmental education events.

The Alliance includes Bass Coast Shire Council, Parks Victoria, Phillip Island Nature Park, Landcare and Coast Action / Coastcare.

Groups involved in displays and interpretation at the Expo were: Bass Coast Shire Council; Phillip Island and Powlett Landcare; Phillip Island Nature Park; Parks Victoria; Coast Action / Coastcare; Western Port Water; South Gippsland Water; Friends of the Koala; Friends of Wonthaggi Heathlands and Coastal Reserve; WESBOC; Barb Martin Bushbank; Phillip Island Conservation Society; Foster Foundation; Bunurong Land Council and South Gippsland Environmental Education and Interpretation.
